The 16 best dark fantasy games on PC, console and mobile

Dark fantasy is fantasy with the lights turned down: cursed kingdoms, dying gods, monsters that used to be people, and heroes who rarely come out unchanged. It is the mood of Berserk and the Souls games, and the one we are building our own game in. This list covers the best dark fantasy games across every platform, from huge open worlds to small 2D gems and a few games that play well on a phone. Prices are regular US prices on the day we checked, and every card links to the store.

Our game

Path of Orren

The Path of Orren team

Full disclosure: this one is ours, so it isn't ranked with the others. Path of Orren is the game our small team is making, a free dark-fantasy party roguelite for iPhone and Android: you gather a party of unlikely heroes, set them on the field and lead them down a road of fights, forges, treasures and strange events, and the battles play out on their own while your choices decide who makes it to the end. Its world is a dying kingdom of cursed orchards, brass bellworks and storm-glass ruins, painted scene by scene. It isn't out yet, and you can join the waitlist to play it first.

Soulslikes and dark fantasy action

These are the games most people mean when they say dark fantasy: demanding combat, ruined worlds and stories told through item descriptions and broken architecture.

Elden Ring

1Elden Ring

FromSoftware · Released in 2022 · PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch 2

FromSoftware's open world, the Lands Between, is shattered and haunted and enormous. The combat is as demanding as the Souls games, but the open world lets you ride away from a boss that is too hard and come back stronger. It reached Switch 2 in August 2026, and its Shadow of the Erdtree expansion is one of the best ever made.

Bloodborne

2Bloodborne

  • Not on phones

FromSoftware · Released in 2015 · PS4

A gothic, plague-ridden city, hunters with transforming weapons, and a story that turns into cosmic horror. Bloodborne is faster and more aggressive than the Souls games, and many players consider it FromSoftware's best. It is still only on PS4, playable on PS5 through backward compatibility.

Dark Souls III

3Dark Souls III

FromSoftware · Released in 2016 · PS4, Xbox One

The last of the Souls trilogy, set in a dying kingdom where even the fire is running out. Its bosses are some of the best in the series, and its world is as bleak as dark fantasy gets.

Lies of P

4Lies of P

NEOWIZ · Released in 2023 · PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch 2

A soulslike retelling of Pinocchio in a ruined Belle Époque city overrun by puppets. You build your weapons from separate blades and handles, and choose when to lie. It is the best soulslike not made by FromSoftware, and it reached Switch 2 in August 2026.

Lords of the Fallen

5Lords of the Fallen

Hexworks · Released in 2023 · PS5, Xbox Series X|S

A soulslike where a lantern lets you see and cross into Umbral, a parallel realm of the dead layered on top of the living world. The idea is brilliant, and the world design is full of surprises. Its sequel was delayed to early 2027.

Elden Ring Nightreign

6Elden Ring Nightreign

FromSoftware · Released in 2025 · PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One

A roguelite spin-off of Elden Ring for one, two or three players (duos arrived in a July 2025 update). Each run lasts three in-game days on a shrinking map and ends against a Nightlord. It is short, intense and best with friends.

Dark fantasy RPGs

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

7The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

CD PROJEKT RED · Released in 2015 · PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch, Switch 2

Geralt of Rivia hunts monsters for money in a war-torn world where every contract has a sting in its tail. The writing, the quests and the moral choices still set the standard for fantasy RPGs. A remaster came out in September 2026, free for owners on PC, PS5 and Xbox.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

8Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

Sandfall Interactive · Released in 2025 · PS5, Xbox Series X|S

A turn-based RPG with real-time dodges and parries. Every year, a being called the Paintress erases everyone of a certain age, and an expedition sets out to stop her. It is beautiful, heartbreaking and won Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2025.

Diablo IV

9Diablo IV

Blizzard Entertainment · Released in 2023 · PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch 2

The fourth Diablo is a grim, online action RPG across a demon-ravaged world, with seasons and endless loot. Its tone is the darkest the series has been since Diablo II. It reached Switch 2 in September 2026.

Path of Exile 2

10Path of Exile 2

Grinding Gear Games · Released in 2024 · PS5, Xbox Series X|S

An action RPG with a huge passive skill tree, socketable skills and slower, more deliberate combat than most games of its kind. It is still in early access, sold as a supporter pack, and becomes free-to-play on December 11, 2026.

2D and indie dark fantasy

Hollow Knight: Silksong

11Hollow Knight: Silksong

Team Cherry · Released in 2025 · PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch, Switch 2

The long-awaited sequel to Hollow Knight. As Hornet, you climb a haunted kingdom with fast, acrobatic combat. It is more melancholic than grim, but its world is full of dread and decay, and it was one of the biggest releases of 2025.

Blasphemous 2

12Blasphemous 2

The Game Kitchen · Released in 2023 · PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch

A 2D action game through a grotesque land drawn from Spanish Catholic imagery: penitents, relics, saints and suffering. Three weapons open different paths through the world. Nothing else looks like it. The first Blasphemous is on iPhone and Android too.

Darkest Dungeon II

13Darkest Dungeon II

Red Hook Studios · Released in 2023 · PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch, Switch 2

A gothic turn-based party roguelike: four heroes ride a stagecoach toward a mountain, managing stress, wounds and relationships that can turn ugly. Few games make you feel the weight of a doomed journey like this. It is coming to iPhone and Android in 2027.

Death's Door

14Death's Door

Acid Nerve · Released in 2021 · PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch

You play a crow who reaps souls for a living, in an isometric action adventure with dungeons in the spirit of Zelda. It is darkly funny, melancholic and short, which makes it a perfect weekend game.

Dark fantasy games on mobile

Dark fantasy on a phone is harder to find, but these two are made for it, and several games above have mobile versions too.

Grimvalor

15Grimvalor

Direlight · Released in 2018 · Switch

A side-scrolling hack-and-slash built for touch controls, with Souls-style checkpoints and upgrades. It is one of the best action games on mobile, and it plays like a console game. It costs US$5.99 on iPhone, and the first act is free on Android.

Diablo Immortal

16Diablo Immortal

Blizzard Entertainment · Released in 2022

A full online Diablo made for phones, set between Diablo II and Diablo III. It is free-to-play, with in-app purchases, and its dungeons and atmosphere are the real thing.

Also on mobile: Dead Cells, the first Blasphemous, and Darkest Dungeon on iPad. Darkest Dungeon II is coming to iPhone and Android in 2027. For more games on your phone, see our list of the best roguelike games on iPhone and Android.
